Russell Frye

New Mexico

Russell Frye grew up south of Gallup, New Mexico on the Ramah-Navajo reservation. His mother is a traditional potter from Tesuque Pueblo and his father is an artist from Ft. Collins, Colorado. Russell works in mixed media, painting/printmaking, as well as creating pieces in cast-bronze and most recently, glass. He studied at the University of New Mexico branch in Taos, as well as Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. Frye joined the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in fall 2011. While at IAIA in 2012, he began and internship with the New Mexico Experimental Glass Workshop. It was during this time that Frye discovered his passion for working with glass as a medium. Frye truly believes that, "Glass is an amazing material. It captivates you, draws you in, and can be used for a boundless number of applications. Light, color, and form come together to create a symphony for the eyes. It's awesome!"
